How to spot a fake Sugilite

Sugilite is a rare and highly valued gemstone, which unfortunately makes it a target for counterfeiters. It is important to be able to distinguish a genuine sugilite from a fake in order to ensure that you are getting what you paid for.

Here are some tips on how to spot a fake sugilite:

Tip 1:

Look at the color: High quality, genuine sugilite has a rich purple color, and has natural gradients or wavy lines, and appear somewhat glassy, luminous. If the color appears too flat or bright, it may be dyed and heated (above picture). If you suspect a Sugilite is fake, the dye may come off if you use a nail polish remover on it. 

Tip 2:

Check the price: If the price of the sugilite seems too good to be true, beware. Just like the price of gold, Sugilite also has its "market price" and its hard to go too far from it. The sellers and buyers usually trade at market price. Remember, genuine sugilite is a rare gemstone and is sold at a premium price.

Tip 3:

Check for uniformity: Genuine sugilite is not always uniform in color or pattern. If the gemstone looks too perfect or uniform, it may be a fake.

Tip 4:

Check for inclusions: Inclusions, or natural imperfections, are common in genuine sugilite. If the gemstone appears too clear or flawless, it may be a fake.

Tip 5:

Check for hardness: Sugilite has a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6.5, which means it is relatively soft compared to other gemstones. If the gemstone appears too hard or scratch-resistant, it may be a fake.

Tip 6:

Touch and feel the beads. If it doesn't have any "coolness" to it, and feels plasticly, it might be made of plastic. Nowadays, the imitations have became "smarter', and they would use real and cheap gemstones, and use dye to make it appear like Sugilite. 

Tip 7:

Seek a professional opinion: If you are still unsure about the authenticity of the sugilite, it is best to seek the opinion of a professional gemologist or jeweler.
